An armed man has been arrested after stabbing a woman in the streets of central Sydney on Tuesday. A second woman was found dead inside a building on the same street. The suspect had a history of mental illnesses.
The suspect had formerly been vocal about terrorism but had no links to any such organizations. The stabbing is not currently being classified as a terrorist act but will be reinvestigated shortly.
The suspect was detained by three men: Lee Cuthbert, Paul O’Shaughnessy, and Luke O’Shaughnessy. They were all working in a nearby office when they heard the commotion coming from the streets. They were praised by the Police Minister, David Elliot, for being outstanding citizens.
The incident occurred in a busy area in Sydney at about 2:00 local time. Videos have revealed the suspect shouting “Allahu Akbar” and “shoot me”. He had been running around with a butcher’s knife. The victim was immediately brought to a hospital and is in stable condition, while the body of a 21-year-old was found nearby.
Following the incident, Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison tweeted that the attack was deeply concerning but praised the men who helped take down the suspect.
